Four types of stack, to<br \/>\ngive linear or progressive load\/deflection curves as required, are<br \/>\nconsidered: regular stacks of identical springs, irregular stacks<br \/>\nof identical springs, stacks of non-identical springs, and nested<br \/>\nstacks. The effects of friction, both between springs and between<br \/>\nthe springs and the guides, are discussed. It is recommended that<br \/>\nESDU 78043 is also used to calculate the stresses in the critical<br \/>\nsprings in the stack. A comprehensive practical worked example<br \/>\nshows how the methods can be applied in design.
