The Lieblein method of<br \/>\nfitting the maxima with a Fisher-Tippett Type 1 distribution is<br \/>\ndetailed and an alternative method of predicting extreme values<br \/>\nfrom the parent probability distribution function (of Weibull form)<br \/>\nis provided and allows good estimates of extreme speeds to be<br \/>\nobtained from relatively short records. Methods of analysing and<br \/>\nsynthesising data when more than one storm mechanism contributes to<br \/>\nthe extremes are included. Methods are recommended for<br \/>\nextrapolating extreme values for depressions, thunderstorms or<br \/>\ntropical storms to heights and terrain roughnesses different from<br \/>\nthose at the measurement site. To assist in the analysis of<br \/>\nhistorical wind speed records, types of anemometers used and their<br \/>\npossible inaccuracies are discussed.
