Provides requirements for vinyl paints used as primers, intermediate coats and finishing coats intended for the exterior protection of iron and steel against atmospheric corrosion.
Scope
This Standard sets out requirements for vinyl paints to be used as primers, intermediate coats and finishing coats and intended for the protection of steel against exterior atmospheric corrosion. Paints specified in this Standard are those described under Paint References 7, 16 and 23 in AS 2312.
Normally applied by conventional air or airless spray, vinyl primers, vinyl high-build paints and gloss finishing paints are intended for protection of steel against corrosion in damp or wet areas, coastal/marine environments and areas of high humidity or industrial fallout.
The vinyl primer is usually supplied as light grey or red oxide and is intended as a base coat for vinyl finishing coats for direct application to bare steel or as a tie coat over a zinc primer.
The high-build vinyl paints are available in a range of colours including micaceous iron oxide (MIO) pigmentation and are intended for use as intermediate or finishing coats where extra protection is required.
The vinyl gloss paints are primarily intended as finishing coats over vinyl primer or high-build vinyl. The vinyl high-build and gloss may also be used over other primers. Although available in a range of colours, early chalking and loss of gloss is characteristic but this has no significant effect on the protective properties of the coating.
NOTES:
1 These paints may be used for paint systems MP3-A, MP3-B, MP3-C, MP5-C, MP5-G, MP5-L, LP1-C, LP1-G, GZLP-H, MSZLP-E described in AS 2312.
2 Appendix A provides recommendations on information which should be provided by the purchaser at the time of enquiry or order.
3 Additional information on the use and application of vinyl paints is given in Appendix B.
