As the need for up-to-date roadways, bridges, and tunnels increases so does the construction costs associated with such projects. The need to improve the infrastructure continues to present a growing problem. Roadways, bridges, and tunnels continue to fall into disrepair because the ever increasing operating costs continue to minimize the amount of repair that can actually be completed. Roadways are now being built with the emphasis on collecting money directly for the use of the facility. The collection of tolls is the most common method for an Authority to offset the burden of continued maintenance or even expansion. This document has been assembled to aid the roadway lighting designer in understanding the roadway lighting needs for facilities specifically designed to collect tolls, commonly called Toll Plazas. The lighting for Toll Plazas is defined by many tasks. Toll Plazas consist of four distinct driving areas: Approach/Departure Roads/Zones, Infield, Queuing/Areas, and Toll Collection Island. Each area has a distinct task and requires special design considerations. This design guide does not include lighting criteria for signs, collection booth, service building, parking facilities, any area not associated with driving lanes, cameras, and electronic toll collection equipment.
