More targeted scope for the 2013 NFPA 52 focuses exclusively on CNG and LNG fuels to provide up-to-date safeguards against related hazards. The cost advantage of natural gas over petroleum based liquid fuels has led to an increase in the number of natural gas-fueled vehicles being put into service. This has resulted in heightened interest in the design, installation, operation, and maintenance of CNG and LNG engine fuel systems and dispensing systems. The 2013 NFPA 52: Vehicular Gaseous Fuel Systems Code presents the latest fire safety rules for compressed natural gas (CNG) fuel systems and liquefied natural gas (LNG) systems on all vehicle types — plus their respective compression, storage, and dispensing systems. It applies to all facilities with LNG storage in containers of 70,000 gallons or less. The most important change to this Standard edition is that the scope has been revised to focus exclusively on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) vehicular fuels. Requirements for hydrogen vehicular fuels have been moved to NFPA 2: Hydrogen Technologies Code.
