This Japanese Industrial Standard specifies the general references of mounting dimensions 1) and fits for rolling bearings (hereafter referred to as "bearings").

NOTE 1 For reference, the mounting dimensions of radial bearings with adapter and radial cylindrical roller bearings of high load capacity type are given in Annex A, and the numerical values relating to tolerance classes of shaft and housing used regularly, and fits are given in Annex B.

NOTE 2 It is preferable to consult the manufacturer about the mounting dimensions and fits of bearings not specified herein.

NOTE 3 It is preferable to determine the geometrical tolerances for the deviation from circular form of mounting part, etc. in consideration of the service conditions.

Note 1) The mounting dimensions of bearings mean the dimensions relating to the mounting of bearings at the bearing seating of shaft and the bearing seating of housing, and the adjacent parts.

This Standard specifies cast and pressed housings (hereafter referred to as "housings") used for insert bearings given in JIS B 1558 (hereafter referred to as "bearings").

This Standard is applicable to pillow block housings, flanged housings, take-up housings, and cartridge type housings.

The lubricator (lubrication hole and grease nipple) may be provided in the lubrication zone specified in JIS B 1558 if necessary, and when provided, they should intersect this zone in such a way that lubricant will satisfactorily feed from the housing through this zone.

The exact design of the apparatus is not otherwise covered by this Standard.

NOTE 1 The International Standard corresponding to this Standard and the symbol of degree of correspondence are as follows:

ISO 3228 : 1993 Rolling bearings—Cast and pressed housings for insert bearings (MOD)

The symbols which denote the degree of correspondence in the contents between the relevant International Standard and JIS are IDT (identical), MOD (modified), and NEQ (not equivalent) according to ISO/IEC Guide 21.

NOTE 2 The bearings specified in JIS B 1558 and the housings specified in this Standard together comprise the insert bearing units specified in JIS B 1557.

This Standard classifies and defines the terms and describes the characteristics, changes in appearance and possible causes of failure of rolling bearings occurring in service.

For the purposes of this Standard the term "failure of rolling bearings" means the result of a defect or damage that prevents the bearing meeting the intended design performance.

Consideration is restricted to characteristic forms of change in appearance and failure, which have a well-defined appearance and which can be attributed to particular causes with a high degree of certainty.

The features of particular interest for explaining changes and failures are described.

The various forms are illustrated with photographs and diagrams, and the most frequent causes are indicated.

The failure mode designations shown in clause 5 are recommended for general use, but similar expressions or synonyms are given within parentheses below the titles.

Examples of rolling bearing failures are given in Annex A, together with a description of the causes of failure and proposed corrective actions.

NOTE: The International Standard corresponding to this Standard and the symbol of degree of correspondence are as follows:

ISO 15243 : 2004 Rolling bearings-Damage and failures-Terms, characteristics and causes (IDT)

The symbols which denote the degree of correspondence in the contents between the relevant International Standard and JIS are IDT (identical), MOD (modified), and NEQ (not equivalent) according to ISO/ IEC Guide 21.
