This Handbook provides guidance on the application of communications cabling standards such as AS/NZS ISO/IEC 15018 to residential communications cabling.
This Handbook is intended to be a ‘field’ document for cablers to assist them to cable residential premises for telephone, data, TV, control and security, and provide guidance on the application of requirements, with cross references to the actual Standards, where it is necessary for clarification.
Figure 1.1 illustrates the range of complexity, from a single, self-contained dwelling to multiple dwellings.
Appendix A contains a glossary of terms and abbreviations used in this Handbook.

The objective of this Technical Specification is to address the support of safety extra low voltage and limited power source applications that provide remote power over balanced cabling in accordance with the reference implementations of AS/NZS ISO/IEC 11801 series standards using currents per conductor of up to 500 mA and target the support of applications that provide remote power over balanced cabling to terminal equipment; cover the transmission and electrical parameters needed to support remote power over balanced cabling; cover various installation scenarios and how these may impact the capability of balanced cabling to support remote powering; and specify design and configuration of cabling as specified in AS/NZS ISO/IEC 11801-1.

Scope

This document
a) addresses the support of safety extra low voltage (SELV) and limited power source (LPS) applications that provide remote power over balanced cabling in accordance with the reference implementations of ISO/IEC 11801 series standards using currents per conductor of up to 500 mA and targets the support of applications that provide remote power over balanced cabling to terminal equipment,
b) covers the transmission and electrical parameters needed to support remote power over balanced cabling,
c) covers various installation scenarios and how these may impact the capability of balanced cabling to support remote powering,
d) specifies design and configuration of cabling as specified in ISO/IEC 11801-1.
NOTE SELV requirements specify a maximum voltage of 60 V DC and LPS is understood in the applications referenced to be up to 100 W supplied within 4-pair cabling.
This document includes a mathematical model to predict the behaviour of different bundle sizes, various cabling constructions, and installation conditions for different current capacities.
Safety (e.g. electrical safety and protection and fire) and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements are outside the scope of this document, and are covered by other standards and regulations. However, information given by this document can be of assistance.

This Handbook provides cablers with a ‘field’ document to allow them to install a generic, flexible cabling scheme such that modifications are safe, easy and economical in commercial and industrial premises for voice, data, image, video and control signals, guiding them through these and other appropriate standards requirements with cross references to the actual Standards, should that become necessary for clarification.
Documents referred to in this Handbook are listed in Appendix G. Lists of terms and their definitions, abbreviations and acronyms are provided by Appendix H.
International Standard ISO/IEC 11801 specifies a generic cabling system for use within customer premises which may comprise single or multiple buildings (on a campus) with geographical span of up to 3000 metres.
This cabling system supports current products and provides a basis for future product development and applications standardization.
AS/NZS 3080 is an adoption of ISO/IEC 11801, with additional information specific to Australia and New Zealand given in an Annex.
AS/NZS ISO/IEC 24702 in an identical adoption of ISO/IEC 24702:2006 which is the International Industrial Cabling Standard and which in turn is based on ISO/IEC 11801.
AS/NZS ISO/IEC 24702 supports a wide range of communications services including automation, process control and monitoring applications for use within industrial premises or industrial areas. It covers balanced cabling and optical fibre cabling in which the maximum distance over which communications services have to be distributed is 10 000 m.
AS/NZS 3084:2003 sets out standard practice for the reticulation of cabling systems within and between buildings via a variety of mechanical artifices.
AS/ACIF S008:2006 and AS/ACIF S009:2006 set out approved equipment requirements and the ‘Wiring Rules’, respectively, for customer premises cabling whilst identifying hazards.
AS/NZS IEC 61935.1:2006 is identical adoption of the international copper cabling testing standard, IEC 61935-1:2005.
AS/NZS IEC 61935.2:2006 is an identical adoption of the international copper patch cord testing standard, IEC 61935-2:2005.
AS/NZS ISO/IEC 14763.3 is an identical adoption of the international fibre optic testing standard, ISO/IEC 14763-3:2006.
