Specifies safety requirements for diesel engine systems that are fire-protected for use in those parts of underground coal mines where there is minimal risk of explosive gases ever being present. Requirements are also given for marking, testing and documentation.

Scope

This Standard specifies safety requirements for diesel engine systems that are fire protected for use in designated safe areas in underground coal mines. It applies to diesel engine systems with heavy duty applications. Whether a particular application is heavy duty will need to be determined by the end user and the manufacturer, using risk management processes.
NOTES:
1 Designated safe area is defined in Clause 1.4.3.
2 The Appendices in this Standard are included in a logical sequential order:
(a) Appendix A provides guidance for demonstrating compliance to this Standard.
(b) Appendix B nominates the requirements for determining load-speed characteristics.
(c) Appendix C nominates the requirements for determining the constituents of the exhaust gas.
(d) Appendix D nominates the requirements for determining gaseous emission levels.
(e) Appendix E nominates the requirements for duration testing for temperatures and fluid usage.
(f) Appendix F nominates the test requirements for protection systems.
(g) Appendix G nominates the test requirements for spark arresters.
(h) Appendix H nominates the test requirements for particulate filter components.
(i) Appendix I specifies measuring equipment.
(j) Appendix J specifies diesel fuel used for testing.
(k) Appendix K provides a chart to compare smoke measurements using different units of measure.
3 This Standard addresses abnormal combustion.

Specifies safety requirements for diesel engine systems that are explosion-protected for use in underground coal mines, including use in explosion-risk zones. It implies limited time safe operation in atmospheres containing up to 1% methane.

Scope

This Standard specifies safety requirements for diesel engine systems that are explosion-protected for use in underground coal mines, including use in explosion-risk zones.
NOTES:
1 Compliance to this Standard implies a limited time safe operation in atmospheres containing up to 1 percent methane, including –
(a) the control of surface temperature, to avert ignition of coal dust that could settle on a hot surface;
(b) containment or elimination of flames and sparks that could ignite flammable gases and dust that may be present (such as in underground coal mines); and
(c) control of diesel emissions.
2 This Standard also addresses inadvertent short-term exposure to high methane levels and any consequent abnormal combustion.
3 Appendix A gives guidance for demonstrating compliance with this Standard.

Appendices in this Standard cover the following:
Recognized service facilities (see Appendix A).
Training and competencies (see Appendix B).
Requirements for hydrostatic testing (see Appendix C).

Specifies rules for the safe design, construction, installation and operation of air compressors located in underground mines to accommodate underground applications. The Standard is based on ISO 5388:1981, the full text of which has been reproduced. Variations to ISO 5388 have been given in an appendix.

Scope

1.1 This International Standard establishes standards for the safe design, conStruction, installation and operation of stationary and skid-mounted air compressors for general use. It specifies requirements to help minimizecompressor accidents and defines general safety practices for the field. Potential hazards associated with compressors are listed and detailed under the following headings in clause 6 :
a) improper lubrication;
b) inadequate cooling;
c) mechanical failures;
d) personal injury;
e) exposure to noise;
f) fir es and explosions in the pressure system;
g) crankcase explosions;
h) incorrect installation, operation or maintenance.

This International Standard does not cover the prime movers, which are dealt with in other International Standards.

1.2 This International Standard is based on the requirement that the compressor components be designed in accordance with recognized good practice and applicable national standards.

1.3 This International Standard is intended to apply to stationary and skid-mounted air compressors for general use. However, the following types of compressor are specifically excluded :
a) compressors with a shaft input less than 2 kW;
b) compressors with an effective discharge pressure less than 0,5 bar (50 kPa);
c) compressors with an effective discharge pressure exceeding 50 bar (5 MPa);
d) compressors specifically supplying air for breathing, diving or surgery;
e) compressors used for air brake systems
f) ejectors.
