This Standard specifies methods for testing the durability of edge seals used on the periphery of insulating glass units by means of climate tests.

Of the methods for testing the durability of edge seals by climate tests, the method intended for the use in the North American market is designated as Approach 1 and for the use in the European market as Approach 2 in this Standard.

This Standard is applicable to sealed, insulating glass units with one or two cavity layers, including insulating glass units with tubes connecting the cavity layers and the surrounding atmosphere for the purpose of equalizing pressure.

This Standard is not applicable to insulating glass units that contain a spandrel glass coating and does not apply to insulating glass units whose function is decorative only.

This Japanese Industrial Standard specifies the tempered fire resistance glass which is rectangular or square in shape and used for fire protection equipment in buildings.

The tempered fire resistance glass constituting sealed insulating glass, laminated glass and laminated sealed insulating glass is also within the scope of this Standard.

NOTE: The tempered fire resistance glass is a glass manufactured to be suitable for fire protective purposes by the following process: The soda lime glass, used as a base material, is cut to the specified dimensions, given a special polishing around the edge, and then given a controlled thermal treatment to induce compressive stress on the glass surface, and the edge strength is increased so that its heat crack resistance is enhanced.
