Full Description

The revised and expanded edition of SSPC's most widely used visual reference features over 50 full-color photos of painted and unpainted steel surfaces before and after dry abrasive blast cleaning.

Like the original version published in 1989, the revised SSPC-VIS 1 contains photos depicting four unpainted, rusted steel surfaces prepared in accordance with the SSPC/NACE specifications for white metal, near-white, commercial, and brush-off blast cleaning, plus additional photos depicting various white metal surfaces obtained with different metallic and non-metallic abrasives.

In addition to the all of the photographs found in the original, the revised SSPC-VIS 1 contains an entirely new series of photos depicting three previously painted surfaces cleaned to white metal (SSPC-SP 5/NACE No. 1), near-white (SSPC-SP 10/NACE No. 2), commercial (SSPC-SP 6/NACE No. 3), industrial (SSPC-SP 14/NACE No. 8), and brush-off blast (SSPC-SP 7/NACE No. 4) finishes. The revised SSPC-VIS 1 also contains a new series of photos that show variations in white metal surfaces caused by differences in profile height, angle of view, and lighting.

Full Description

This technology update describes methods and equipment used for monitoring emissions during surface preparation and other emission generating operations and to assess whether the controls in place are adequate for protecting the public, the environment, and adjacent personnel or meeting federal, state and local regulations or specified requirements. The intent of this report is to present the user with a variety of methods of testing that may be appropriate for monitoring project emissions, and describe the information provided by each of the monitoring methods. The criteria used for selecting a particular monitoring method must be determined on a case-by-case basis by the facility owner or specifier but should include consideration of the type of surface preparation operation being performed; the dust-producing nature of the operation; the type of containment; proximity of the work area(s) to the public; sensitive environmental receptors; adjacent personnel; the amount of lead, other toxic metal, or hazards present in the coating, abrasive or other materials; and other site-specific characteristics.

1. SCOPE

1.1 This technology update discusses the risks associated with the maintenance painting practice known as overcoating. Factors affecting overcoating application, service and costs are discussed.

1.2 This document is intended to serve as a resource for facility owners and others charged with developing and implementing maintenance painting programs.

1.3 Overcoating is one of several maintenance painting options. This document is not intended to provide a detailed description or comparison of the relative merit and cost considerations of overcoating versus other maintenance painting options. For a more complete and detailed discussion of maintenance painting practices, the reader should refer to SSPC-PA Guide 5, Guide to Maintenance Painting Programs.
