1.1.1 Scope of Eurocode 5<\/b><\/p>\n

    P Eurocode 5 applies to the design of buildings and civil engineering works in timber (solidtimber, sawn, planed or in pole form, glued laminated timber or wood-based structural products,e.g. LVL) or wood-based panels jointed together with adhesives or mechanical fasteners. It complies with the principles and requirements for the safety and serviceability of structures and the basis of design and verification given in EN 1990:2002.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    P Eurocode 5 is only concerned with requirements for mechanical resistance, serviceability, durability and fire resistance of timber structures. Other requirements, e.g concerning thermal or sound insulation, are not considered.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  3. \n

    Eurocode 5 is intended to be used in conjunction with:<\/p>\n

    EN 1990:2002 Eurocode – Basis of structural design\u201d<\/p>\n

    EN 1991 \u201cActions on structures\u201d<\/p>\n

    EN\u00b4s for construction products relevant to timber structures<\/p>\n

    EN 1998 \u201cDesign of structures for earthquake resistance\u201d, when timber structures are built in seismic regions.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Eurocode 5 is subdivided into various parts:<\/p>\n

    EN 1995-1 General<\/p>\n

    EN 1995-2 Bridges<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  5. \n

    EN 1995-1 \u201cGeneral\u201d comprises:<\/p>\n

    EN 1995-1-1 General \u2013 Common rules and rules for buildings<\/p>\n

    EN 1995-1-2 General \u2013 Structural Fire Design<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  6. \n

    EN 1995-2 refers to the General rules in EN 1995-1-1. The clauses in EN 1995-2 supplement the clauses in EN 1995-1.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    1.1.2 Scope of EN 1995-1-2<\/b><\/p>\n

      P EN 1995-1-2 deals with the design of timber structures for the accidental situation of fire exposure and is intended to be used in conjunction with EN 1995-1-1 and EN 1991-1-2:2002. EN 1995-1-2 only identifies differences from, or supplements normal temperature design.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    2. \n

      P EN 1995-1-2 deals only with passive methods of fire protection. Active methods are not covered.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    3. \n

      P EN 1995-1-2 applies to building structures that are required to fulfil certain functions when exposed to fire, in terms of<\/p>\n

      • \n

        avoiding premature collapse of the structure (load-bearing function)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

      • \n

        limiting fire spread (flames, hot gases, excessive heat) beyond designated areas (separating function).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n

      • \n

        P EN 1995-1-2 gives principles and application rules for designing structures for specified requirements in respect of the aforementioned functions and levels of performance.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

      • \n

        P EN 1995-1-2 applies to structures or parts of structures that are within the scope of EN 1995-1-1 and are designed accordingly.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

      • \n
