It lays down the characteristics and details for assessment of bio-based surfactants as to whether they:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>are fit for purpose in terms of performance related properties;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>comply with the requirements regarding the health, safety and environment which apply to general surfactants;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>are derived from a certain minimum percentage of biomass; and<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>comply with at least similar sustainability criteria as comparable (non-bio-based) surfactants.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The regulatory requirements applicable to surfactants are also applicable to bio-based surfactants.<\/p>\n<div class=\"non-normative-note\">\n<div class=\"note-label\">\n  NOTE\n <\/div>\n<p><span class=\"std\"><span class=\"std-ref\">EN&nbsp;16575<\/span><\/span> defines the term \u201cbio-based\u201d as derived from biomass and clarifies that \u201cbio-based\u201d does not imply \u201cbiodegradable\u201d.
