It may be considered to provide background<br \/>\ninformation for ESDU 09006. Damping from external factors, such as<br \/>\nlubrication, riveted joints and viscoelastic additions to the<br \/>\nstructure, are excluded from consideration. In the Item the main<br \/>\nenergy dissipation mechanisms responsible for material damping are<br \/>\npresented. The first part of the Item is devoted to linear material<br \/>\ndamping, which is amplitude-independent but frequency-dependent.<br \/>\nMost processes responsible for linear damping are relaxation<br \/>\nprocesses, such as macroscopic and microscopic thermoelastic<br \/>\nrelaxations, point-defect relaxations and relaxations due to<br \/>\ndislocations and grain boundary viscosity. Thermoelastic damping is<br \/>\npresent in all metals and alloys. However, it can only be<br \/>\nidentified at low frequencies, since at higher frequencies metals<br \/>\nhave damping which varies little with frequency. With some<br \/>\nexceptions linear damping does not provide high values of loss<br \/>\nfactors. Nonlinear damping in metals and alloys is<br \/>\namplitude-dependent and frequency-independent.
