Indoor-outdoor cables covered by this Standard are generally
\nderived from outdoor cable designs having the thermal and
\nmechanical robustness that makes them suitable for use in the
\nOutside Plant. Material changes are made, as required, to allow the
\ndesigns to meet their intended fire rating. These cables can be
\nexpected to comply with all specification requirements stipulated
\nin this Standard. <\/p>\n
In cases where outside exposure is limited (less than 10
\nmeters), a weatherized cable may be derived from an indoor cable
\ndesign (backbone or interconnect). As required in Annex B, the
\nindoor cable weatherized for outdoor use uses the basic
\nrequirements found in ICEA S-83- 596. The requirements specified in
\nPart 1 through 8 do not apply, except as invoked by Annex B. <\/p>\n
Cable that is compliant with S-104-696 is considered compliant
\nto S-83-596. <\/p>\n
Application Space <\/p>\n
All designs covered by this Standard are intended for operation
\nunder normal conditions found in the outside plant environment and
\nin the communications user's premises. These products normally
\nconvey communications signals (voice, video, and data) from point
\nto point or point to multi-point, within and outside buildings.
\nProducts covered by this Standard may be factory terminated with
\nconnectors or splicing modules. <\/p>\n
Indoor-outdoor cables are generally used to make
\ninterconnections within and between adjacent buildings or to the
\nfirst outdoor splice point. These cables are fully resistant to the
\ntypical outside plant environment, but their attenuation
\ncharacteristics are not necessarily the same as Outside Plant
\nCommunications cables addressed in S-87-640. See part 8 of this
\nspecification. <\/p>\n
When a hybrid cable (a cable with both optical fibers and
\nmetallic conductors) is required, the applicable metallic conductor
\nrequirements shall be as established by agreement between the end
\nuser and the cable manufacturer. The requirements of ANSI\/ICEA
\nS-84-608 should be considered when determining appropriate
\nrequirements. <\/p>\n
For very-low temperature applications and 1625 nm fiber
\nperformance see S-87-640. <\/p>\n
