The purpose of this technical report is to provide guidelines
\nfor the calculation of polarization mode dispersion (PMD) in fibre
\noptic systems to accommodate the statistical variation of PMD and
\ndifferential group delay (DGD) in optical fibre cables and
\ncomponents.<\/p>\n
This guideline describes methods for calculating PMD due to
\noptical fibre cables and optical components in an optical link.
\nExample calculations are given to illustrate the methods for
\ncalculating total optical link PMD from typical cable and optical
\ncomponent data. The calculations include the statistics of
\nconcatenating individual optical fibre cables drawn from a
\nspecified distribution. The calculations assume that all components
\nhave PMD equal to the maximum specified value.<\/p>\n

\nPMD of optical fibre cables is a current work item to amend IEC
\n60794-3, in SC86A\/WG3 [2]1<\/sup>. The agreements following the
\nlast ballot (86A\/501\/CD) are aligned with the methods given in this
\ntechnical report.<\/p>\n
\nstudy of PMD continues to evolve, therefore the material in this
\ntechnical report may be modified in the future. The following
\nsubject areas are currently beyond the scope of this technical
\nreport, but remain under study:<\/p>\n
\n(PDL) \u2013 if it is assumed that PDL is negligible in optical fibre
\ncables;<\/p>\n
\neffects.<\/p>\n
\nGuidelines on the measurement of PMD of optical fibre and cable are
\ngiven in IEC 61941. The measurement of optical amplifier PMD will
\nbe documented in IEC 61290-11-12<\/sup>. The measurement of
\ncomponent PMD will be documented in IEC 61300-3-323<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n
