{"id":692631,"date":"2024-11-06T05:30:13","date_gmt":"2024-11-06T05:30:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pdfstandards.shop\/product\/uncategorized\/tia-tr-10292004\/"},"modified":"2024-11-06T05:30:13","modified_gmt":"2024-11-06T05:30:13","slug":"tia-tr-10292004","status":"publish","type":"product","link":"https:\/\/pdfstandards.shop\/product\/publishers\/tia\/tia-tr-10292004\/","title":{"rendered":"TIA\/TR-1029:2004"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The purpose of this technical report is to provide guidelines<br \/>\nfor the calculation of polarization mode dispersion (PMD) in fibre<br \/>\noptic systems to accommodate the statistical variation of PMD and<br \/>\ndifferential group delay (DGD) in optical fibre cables and<br \/>\ncomponents.<\/p>\n<p>This guideline describes methods for calculating PMD due to<br \/>\noptical fibre cables and optical components in an optical link.<br \/>\nExample calculations are given to illustrate the methods for<br \/>\ncalculating total optical link PMD from typical cable and optical<br \/>\ncomponent data. The calculations include the statistics of<br \/>\nconcatenating individual optical fibre cables drawn from a<br \/>\nspecified distribution. The calculations assume that all components<br \/>\nhave PMD equal to the maximum specified value.<\/p>\n<p>NOTE The statistical specification of the distribution of the<br \/>\nPMD of optical fibre cables is a current work item to amend IEC<br \/>\n60794-3, in SC86A\/WG3 [2]<sup>1<\/sup>. The agreements following the<br \/>\nlast ballot (86A\/501\/CD) are aligned with the methods given in this<br \/>\ntechnical report.<\/p>\n<p>The calculations described cover first order PMD only. This<br \/>\nstudy of PMD continues to evolve, therefore the material in this<br \/>\ntechnical report may be modified in the future. The following<br \/>\nsubject areas are currently beyond the scope of this technical<br \/>\nreport, but remain under study:<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 calculation of second and higher order PMD;<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 accommodation of components with polarization dependent loss<br \/>\n(PDL) \u2013 if it is assumed that PDL is negligible in optical fibre<br \/>\ncables;<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 system impairments (power penalty) due to PMD;<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 interaction with chromatic dispersion and other nonlinear<br \/>\neffects.<\/p>\n<p>Measurement of PMD is beyond the scope of this technical report.<br \/>\nGuidelines on the measurement of PMD of optical fibre and cable are<br \/>\ngiven in IEC 61941. The measurement of optical amplifier PMD will<br \/>\nbe documented in IEC 61290-11-1<sup>2<\/sup>.
