The role of biogenic hydrocarbons emitted from vegetation continues to remain a troublesome uncertainty in developing effective control strategies to reduce photochemical oxidants. In order to address these uncertainties, the American Petroleum Institute has supported this work to review recent literature and current activities and to critique representative studies as a basis for developing a research plan for future investigations. In this report, an extensive compilation of recent studies related to emission measurements, emission patterns, emission inventories, ambient concentration measurements, and chemical modeling is presented. The compilation is based upon computerized literature searches in combination with a review of research studies currently underway in the U.S. and in Europe. Key papers from the literature were selected for detailed review with respect to both methods and results with an emphasis upon identify those areas where further work is needed. The results from the compilation and review were then used to identify research needs and to specify research tasks required to improve our overall understanding of biogenic hydrocarbon emissions to a level sufficient for the development of effective ozone control strategies.
