This document provides technical information concerning the safe use of structured aluminum packing in a distillation column where commercial purity oxygen gas and liquid is produced. A safety issue arises from the potential combustibility of the structured aluminum packing in the presence of oxygen. Over several decades of experience with aluminum sieve trays in the air separation industry, no sieve tray has ever been known to have burned in oxygen. However, laboratory tests suggest that traditional aluminum sieve trays are easier to ignite than structured aluminum packing.
