The purpose of this Standard is to facilitate identification, by class, of drugs in syringes filled by the user, used in anaesthesia and critical care. This Standard specifics design requirements for size, shape, colour and pattern, and type used on labels applied by or under the direct supervision of the attending physician to unlabelled syringes, filled by the attending physician or his/her agent, to identify the drug content for anaesthesia and critical care by class. The use of colours is intended only as an aid in identifying drug groups and docs not absolve the user from the duty of reading the label before use to correctly identtfy the specific drug and concentrations. The user may alternatively use white labels rather than coloured labels: however, if colours are used, they shall comply with the range of colours specified in this Standard to avoid confusion. This Standard is not intended to cover labels.applied by the drug manufacturer but such labels should be compatible in colour with this Standard. In this Standard, “shall" indicates a mandatory requirement: “should" indicates a recommendation or that which is advised but not mandatory. Notes to figures and tables are considered to be part of the figure or table and are written as mandatory requirements.
